What are the bitter lessons of history teach us and are they able to teach something at all? What is the place of Russia in the modern world, why is it similar and not like the USA, Europe, China? What are the advantages and disadvantages of democracy? Do we need the death penalty? How can social evil become familiar - corruption, inequality, restriction of freedoms?

The author does not give simple answers and ready -made recipes. He turns to the past, throws possible scenarios of the future, ironically pointing the pressing problems and makes the reader independently look for a solution and draw a conclusion about whether we have a reason for optimism.
