The essay of Joseph Brodsky (1940-1996), selected by the author himself. For the first time, this collection was published in New York in 1995 and became the last book that the great poet, translator, playwright was destined to see. Most of the essays were written by Brodsky in English and only a few in Russian. Some of the translations were performed during the life of the author and with his direct participation. This includes historical and philosophical excursions, autobiographical plots, poetic analysis of poems by Russian and foreign classics, as well as a speech read by Brodsky at the Swedish Royal Academy upon receipt of the Nobel Prize in 1987.
