The book “On the Literary Hero” is the classical work of the outstanding Soviet literary critic Lydia Ginzburg, which became the quintessence of its method. Combining the structural and historical approaches, the researcher recreates a wide picture of the literary process, the core of which appears the evolution of the ways of depicting personality.

on the huge material - from Madame de Lafayette, Abbota Abbot, Goethe, Chatebrian, Stendhal, Lermontov, Constance, Constance Balzac to Dostoevsky, Proust, Joyce and Kafka - Ginzburg shows how the artistic model of character was gradually freed from the framework of the “style” canon. The methods of constructing a hero due to tradition were complicated and eroded, a general desire for aesthetic emancipation led literature on the poetics of individualized, unredalized contexts.
