Above the Kukushkin nest
The novel “Above the Kukushkin Nest” first saw the light in 1962 - and forever turned the world, becoming one of the most religious works of American literature of all time. In a psychiatric hospital, where despotic and barbaric orders gradually destroy the will to the life of patients, how to determine the line between madness and madness? What separates a person from inhumanity? And how to find the path to liberation when you are kept in the walls and framework? Keni's debut novel is rightfully considered the great, changing consciousness. The film adaptation of 1975 received Oscar in five main nominations.
the effect of the novel takes place in a psychiatric hospital in the city of Silel (Oregon). The narrative comes on behalf of the narrator - the Indian named the leader Bromden, one of the patients. One of the main characters is the freedom -loving patient Randle Patrick McMurfi, transferred to a psychiatric hospital from prison. It is assumed that he simulated a mental disorder only in order to avoid hard labor. Other patients are represented in the novel, perhaps not as mentally ill, but as normal people rejected by a sick society. McMurphy is opposed by the older sister Mildred Ratchist, a middle -aged woman working in the hospital department. The older sister, the personification of the system (the plant, as the narrator calls her leader Bromden), whose personal life has not developed, carefully strengthens his power over patients and personnel of the department. The rebel and individualist, McMurfi begins to ruin the order she has arranged and has a significant impact on other patients, learning them to enjoy life and even freeing from chronic complexes. This reaches violating the strict internal routine of the hospital, up to the night party in the department with abundant alcohol consumption and the presence of prostitutes. Being unable to keep the situation under the previous control, the older sister takes McMurphy from herself, and, taking this opportunity, sends him to a lobotomy. McMurphy's life is interrupted, but other patients become bolder, more confident in themselves and are freed from fears before the “normal” world and from the power of the older sister, leaving the hospital.
