He entered the Second World War on September 1, 1939 and in the early days of the war shot down three Junkers. During the Great Patriotic War, he fought behind the front line as part of the Olympus NKVD operational group, took part in many impudent operations against the Nazi troops and gangsting underground in Western Ukraine. He also blew up the Ovruch Gubits-Commissariat in September 1943 and saved from the destruction of Krakow in January 1945, for which he was twice presented to the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, but only in 2007 he received the Golden Star of the Hero of Russia.
