The crimes of the Soviet era in Russia are still not given a significant legal and ethical assessment for the whole society. The lack of such an assessment of the Stalinist state terror and the Soviet totalitarian past prevents modern Russia to say goodbye to this heritage. So far, all the fellow citizens are responsible for the past, it will remain incomplete and will impede the construction of modern democracy. Over the past decades, the path from the dictatorship to democracy has traveled many countries, having developed the rich experience in working out the traumatic past of the XX century, which is almost not known in Russia.

The book for the first time in Russian describes the key models of working with the memory of state crimes and the development of the difficult past practiced in other countries, we propose strategies for adapting these models to the conditions of modern Russia.
