The writer Gertrude Atherton was born and died in her beloved native state of California, she spent a significant amount of time, touring and living in Europe. In the “ancestors” she uses her experience of a traveler in the world, singing an entertaining yarn about several aristocratic English ladies who decide to revive their twilight years, traveling along the stern landscape of the American border.
August 18, 1906 The writer experienced a great earthquake in California. She was proud that she steadfastly suffered the element, standing in the doorway. Aterton compared the destroyed city with the ruins of the ancient world. The author’s personal impressions of the earthquake are displayed in this novel.
