Ancient Rome for our Slavic ancestors was the personification of political power, as well as the stronghold of the Christian faith. Therefore, in Moscow Rus', a state motto arose: "Moscow is the third Rome, but there is no fourth." The second Rome was considered Christian Byzantium, more precisely, its capital Constantinople (or Constantinople). Russian kings emphasized that they inherited power from the rulers of Rome and Byzantium and consider themselves their successors.

But the historical significance of Ancient Rome, of course, is not exhausted by its unprecedented military-political power and dominion over many peoples of antiquity. The Romans contributed to the widespread spread of the cultural heritage that other peoples left, primarily the Greeks. At the same time, in many areas of culture, the Romans themselves achieved great success. Without Latin - the language of Roman poets and prose writers - European school education was not even conceived for a long time, and the main provisions of Roman law formed the basis of the legislation of modern European states.
