Antique space and modern science. Losev A.F.
The publication of the book of the brilliant Russian philosopher Alexei Fedorovich Losev (1893-1988) “Antique Cosmos and Modern Science” is timed to the 130th anniversary of his birth and to the 35th anniversary of his death. In this work, outstanding scientists are given the task of showing “how the ancient cosmos is justified dialectically,” that is, what dialectical categories were used by Greek thinkers in order to “carry out the design of the universe they contemplate”.
The main concepts that underlie the entire study of A.F. Loseva is a name, number and thing. The name in the ancient tradition, according to Losev, is a “face”, an expressive form of a thing itself. The number is a constructive basis of any thing. The thing itself is an independent essence, which is the subject of human knowledge due to the number and name, which are objective methods of the sequential process of understanding objects. Along with this, Losev traces the direct connection of concepts inherent in antiquity with the achievements of science that existed by the time of writing his work.
