Antoshka’s life is not sugar. Together with other homeless children, he asks for alms on the street, but all the money begged for passers -by carries the evil “uncle” with whom he lives. For the slightest fault of his and other little dungeons, brutal flogging awaits.

Only one person is warmly treated with Antoshka - a drunken nobleman and a former officer, whom the surrounding beggars call the “Count”. They save the boy from street life, sheltering him at home.
