Battalions are asking for fire. Bondarev Yu.V.
The story of Yuri Bondarev (1924-2020) “Battalions ask for fire” unfolded in Ukraine in 1943.
Two battalions of the 85th Infantry Regiment should force the Dnieper, create a bridgehead in the area of the village of Novomikhailovka for the subsequent development of the offensive of the division. The battalions were given an order: having strengthened the bridgehead, having tied the battle, to give the signal of the division “ask for fire”, after which all divisional artillery was supposed to blow an enemy. But during the offensive, the army commander orders to transfer divisional artillery to another direction, and “... to stay on the battalions to death with their fire means.” Was there a command order that condemned people to the faithful death, mistake or military maneuver bringing a great victory?
