The action of the “bird of sorrow” unfolds in Zambia of the 1990s, against the backdrop of a failed military coup, election riots and the economic crisis.
When his father suddenly dies at the eleven -year -old Chimuki, it becomes clear that they would seem to be a regular family full of secrets that are not accepted even among adults. Relatives from her husband turn away from their mother and children. Although she tries to stay afloat, after some time she makes a fateful decision that forces Chimuku and her brother Ali look for salvation on the darkest streets of Lusaki. They have to learn how to survive in a dangerous world where cruelty and violence reign.
it is both a tragic story of the family and the national portrait of Zambia during a period when the country turned away from several generations of its children.
