Tom-Aleksandr Dumas, being the son of a black slave and a French aristocrat, made a dizzying career in the army, rising to the rank of general. About how General Dumas personally repelled six banners from a numerically superior enemy, and stopped a whole army near Mantuya, Napoleon himself wrote in his letters. However, close friendship with Bonaparte played a cruel joke with Dumas - the emperor could not reconcile with the popularity of the general. Alex Dumas was imprisoned in the fortress, from where he miraculously escaped.
Later, many of the father’s adventures inspired Alexander Dumas to write “Count Monte Cristo.”
