Black measure is one of the most terrible images of Norwegian folklore, the embodiment of the Great Plague, which fell into Norway in 1346–1353 and claimed almost two -thirds of the population. The outstanding Norwegian artist Theodore Kittelsen (1857–1914) devoted his most famous book “Black Death” - fifteen ballads with illustrations in which the plague appears in the image of a hunched old woman with a broom with a broom and a rake in his hands. “Black Death” is considered the pinnacle of the graphic work of Kittelsen and the masterpiece of the Norwegian book illustration.
