This book is the first part of the three-volume official historiography of the United States fleet in the Civil War of 1861-1865. The author James Russell Solei, lawyer and historian of the Navy, in the future, assistant to the Naval Minister of the United States, gained fame by the publication of the 31st-volume collection “Official Documents of the Navy of the Union and Confederation in the Civil War”, which is the basis of the reader of labor proposed.

The publication is equipped with an author's set of cartographic materials, illustrations and signs. It was translated into Russian for the first time.
