"Botanical Atlas" N.P. Zhivotovsky (1846–1888) - one of the famous books on natural sciences in pre -revolutionary Russia. For almost twenty years, its author gave the pedagogical museum of St. Petersburg, published a variety of works on botany and natural sciences. Zhivotovsky studied at the natural department of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of St. Petersburg University, which he graduated in 1868 and soon entered the Main Directorate of Military Educational Institutions. In 1871, a permanent commission of the pedagogical museum was established. Nikolai Zhivotovsky became the secretary of the commission and the head of the museum. For more than fifteen years, Zhivotovsky worked in this position, fully devoting himself to his beloved business.
In 1883, the stomach fulfilled the treasured dream: he created a training botanical garden at the Pedagogical Museum, which gave the opportunity for teachers of secondary educational institutions to use the necessary during the passage Course with living plants, as well as arrange educational excursions to familiarize students with groups of plants and phenomena of the plant kingdom.
Istotovsky’s works are various natural-historical atlases and tables, popular books for people on natural science, etc.. and are the fruit of his scientific activity, to which he devoted all the time from the service.
