Bridge on Drina. Andrich I., Virta T.N.
Andrich Ivo (1892-1975) is the only Serbian writer awarded the Nobel Prize in literature for the novel “Bridge on Drin”, covering about four centuries-from the heyday of the Ottoman Empire to the beginning of the 20th century.
The central image, which has become fundamental to the whole work, is a bridge over the Drina River in the city of Vishegrad. The bridge, like a dumb witness, remembers all the times when he combined or shared, various cultures, faith, traditions and civilization - east and western.
In the novel, the author not only describes the real events of the history of the region, but also reliably depicts the life and morals of a kind of multinational community that developed on the territory of Vishegrad and the entire Balkan Peninsula, weaving to the narrative of legend and traditions, fairy tales and myths born in this unique environment.
