Byzantine essays since 1961 have been traditionally published by Russian scientists to the International Congresses of Byzantineists. This issue was prepared for the XXIII International Congress in Belgrade. It includes articles reflecting the results of the latest research by scientists of Russia's problems of social, political, ethnic and cultural history of Byzantium, as well as problems of source studies and historiography. In accordance with the principle adopted in this series, most of the articles are profiled taking into account the main theme of the upcoming congress and is devoted to the history of Byzantine civilization as a living organism that appears as a single in its development.
