The action takes place during the uprising of Emelyan Pugachev. It tells the story of the young nobleman Peter Grinev, whom his father sends to Orenburg to “serve under the command” of his ancient comrade. However, Peter gets to the service in the Belogorsk fortress in the Orenburg province, where the main events of the novel occur, including the famous duel scene, the attack of Pugachev, the courageous service and sincere love of the main character for the daughter of the commandant of the fortress.
