“Chapaev” by Dmitry Furmanov (1891–1926) is one of the most grandiose and most important novels of early Soviet literature, reflecting the formation of a great state. The legendary commander, whose fate was told by his combat comrade, became an example for many generations of Soviet people, and the brilliant film of the Vasilyev brothers immortalized the name of the folk hero. Furmanov created a work that is not only the chronicle of the great and terrible years of the Civil War, but also reflects the most important cultural shifts of his time: at that time the poetics of literary text expands its boundaries, borrowing individual techniques of journalistic reporting and cinema.
