The book included the essay of Joseph Brodsky, dedicated to Russian poets and writers - Anna Akhmatova, Osipa Mandelstam, Marina Tsvetaeva, Fedor Dostoevsky, Andrei Platonov and others. Brodsky reflects on the past and future of Russian literature, about its traditions and artistic searches. Most of the essay, with the exception of two, were written in English and published in Russian. They were included in the collection “Less than One” (“Less unity”), published in 1986. Three essays written by Brodsky later are printed in the application.
