“Children of the dungeon” is a abbreviated version of Korolenko’s story “In a bad society”, which was made in 1886 specifically for the Rodnik children's magazine. In this form, the story immediately entered all school aquoor and since then is constantly reprinted.

in the center of the plot is the tragic fate of orphans, forced to live in a world of cruelty and indifference, under the influence of a "bad society." The story awakens in readers a sense of mercy and compassion, aggravated conscientiousness and thirst for justice.
