1940. Italy is involved in the war. After a severe wound, Salvator Todaro refuses to leave the service and takes a submarine with a team of young submariners from different parts of Italy through Gibraltar.

When a cargo Belgian ship is found in the path of Kappellini, Todaro understands that the enemy ship should sink but the sea law for the commander is above the military. Contrary to the order to destroy the enemy, Todaro takes on board the 26 surviving sailors to deliver them to the shore.

So, in a tiny closed space with common troubles, hopes and supplies, very different people are locked, who spoke for a long time, that they are enemies.
