Created during the war years, it consisted of proven in battle, honest and fearless officers of the Red Army. Everyone was afraid of Smersha - and the fascist scouts preparing sabotage in our battle formations, and the Nazi minions operating in a deep Soviet rear. The enemy knew: if the fighters of the Stalinist special forces attacked his trail, a fair and soon court cannot be avoided.

On the eve of the war, a large conspiracy against Stalin was disclosed. Many of its participants are destroyed. But some still managed to hide. Among them is a former reconnaissance officer Reznik. Where is he now: fled to the west? Is fighting at the front? To find and neutralize the fugitive is entrusted to the group of Major Smersh Pavel Romanov. But when crossing the border, the group dies. The major himself first falls into German captivity, and after the escape - to the French partisans. There, in the detachment, he accidentally meets Reznik. The former conspirator courageously fights with the Nazis. Pavel is in a difficult situation: after all, no one canceled the order to destroy the defector...
