At the beginning of the 18th century, the hetman of Left -Bank Ukraine Ivan Mazepa intended to tease it from Russia. To do this, he entered into secret negotiations with the Swedish king Charles XII and the Polish king Stanislav Leshchinsky. The Little Russian Cossacks again turned out to be split. Some of the atamans supported the hetman and joined the Swedish army, but most of the Cossacks condemned Mazepa and raised an uprising.
