He succumbed to the ideas popular at that time that all people are divided into “creatures of trembling” and “Napoleons”. So he decides on the murder of an evil and greedy old woman-percentress in order to change his fate at once and correct the position of his family. Philosophy comes into conflict with the conscience and spiritual state of the hero: he is not able to cope with the serious burden of the crime.
