“Deadment” (1945) - the second novel after the “Age of Maturity” in the trilogy of Sartre “Roads of Freedom”.

Europe froze in the face of an imminent war. With horror, Mathieu, a university teacher of philosophy, is aware that his personal problems, joys and sorrows already mean nothing-like grains of sand in the whirlwind of a giant storm, which is about to sweep away from the face of the earth the whole usual world.

Everything became unimportant - love, friendship, thoughts. And gradually Mathieu, who had not previously accepted the idea of ​​the limb of human life, began to hate life itself - a painful “delay” of the death sentence.
