Demian is a philosophical novel, gloomy and mystical. It can also be considered autobiographical - Hesse declares this in the preface. This is the story of growing up and the formation of a young man, who steps further from the hypocritical norms of public Morality and more clearly discovering for itself the deep, dark "I" - free, not subject to virtuous Pharisees that reigning around. The mysterious friend of Demian helps him in this - the bearer of the "seal of Cain", or the devil, or the mysterious deity, or just a product of the hero’s imagination...
