Desperate characters. Fox P.
It all started with a homeless cat. Sophie Bentswood wanted to treat him with milk, to share with the unfortunate bit of her well -being, so inaccessible to many of her neighbors in Brooklyn. And the cat bit her hand. And a series of ordinary, but, moreover, ominous events begins to torment the Benwart spouses. The expectation of rabies tests becomes a real flour and a test for everyone: for Sophie herself, her husband, their friends. All the faults and abyss of the “exemplary” marriage of Bentvudes are exposed, problems in Sophie’s relations with the world and with himself. The novel immerses the reader in the anxious atmosphere of the psychological films of Bergman and Hitchcock thrillers and holds in incredible tension to the very end. For the first time published in 1970 and gained wide recognition “desperate characters” are rightfully considered the pinnacle of American realism.
