Thomas Gardi is called the last writer of the Victorian era. He owes his glory primarily to the cycle of works created in 1872–1895 - the so -called character and environment novels.

“Return to your homeland” (1878) refers to their number, and “desperate funds” were written a little earlier (1871). In these works, the acute observation of the curtains is fully manifested, its gift to notice the subtlest nuances of human relations, a live picture of the morals that reigned in the English outback of the late 19th century is given.
