A pupil of an engineering school, he lives and studies at the Mikhailovsky castle - the former palace of the knight emperor Paul I, surrounded by a moat, as a medieval fortress, where less than forty years before the emperor was killed by his close associates and where, as they said, his shadow appeared. The fate of Surov to the young Fedor Dostoevsky is the tragic death of his father, poverty, a harsh drill. But faith in its purpose saves him. He has his own world. He with binge reads romantic literature - Schiller, Victor Hugo, Walter Scott. Military service does not seduce him. Having received the rank, he resigned and is completely given to literature.
