The novel describes the ideal planter Edward Clayton, who teaches slaves to literacy, wants to carry out reforms on his estate and on the bride’s estate, but under pressure from neighbors he is forced to abandon his transformations. However, not only the writer offers the peaceful path: a blacksmith runs from the owner, hides in a swamp, gathers like -minded people around him and leads the uprising of runaway slaves.
