In 1958, the Youth Theater Studio, which soon became the contemporary theater, decided to open up to the new play by Alexander Galich, Sailor Silence. In the center of this play about the war, the history of the Jewish family, the head of which dies in the Nazi ghetto, and his son, the violinist David, is at the front. The authorities banned the production of the play, and for the first time it was delivered only in 1988. The history of the failed production formed the basis of the autobiographical story “General Rehearsal.”
The story was first published in Germany in 1974 (ed. “Sowing”), in Russia, supplemented by actions from the play “Sailor Silence”, came out in 1991.
