Genevieve Stebbins (1857-1934) - American writer, taught her own system “Harmonic Gymnastics” and popularized the Delsart self -expression system. At one time, the author established a New York school of expressive self-expression and, having processed the Delsart system, came up with a “modern dance”, which in the 20th century was developed in the USA and Europe. Genevieve Stebbins provided her audience with tools, theory and practice in the framework of the teaching suitable for her contemporaries from the middle and higher classes. Thanks to her books, the women of America at the end of the 19th century got the opportunity to strengthen their body with new physical exercises and express through them their nature, temperament and mood, especially in the field of dance. She actively contributed to the emancipation of women of her time, their emancipation in various fields of life, and some experts came to the conclusion that it was from its presentation in the West that yoga began to develop.
