Ermolova. Shchepkina-Kupernik T.L.
Maria Nikolaevna Ermolova (1853–1928) - the legendary theater actress, Honored Artist of Imperial Theaters. From early childhood, she dreamed of working on stage, spending evenings behind the scenes of the Maly Theater and in her father's soufflier booth. Later, having won the love and recognition of contemporaries, she said: “The unshakable confidence always lived in me that I would be the first actress. This confidence never left me. ”
Tatyana Shchepkina-Kupernik, a writer, a playwright and a translator, was closely connected with a small theater in which Ermolova played and maintained close relations with her family. In her book of memoirs, she tells with the sharpness and liveliness of personal impressions about the game of Ermolova and the entire brilliant ensemble of the actors, which was famous for the Maly Theater at the turn of the century.
“Maria Nikolaevna Ermolova is a whole era for the Russian theater, and for Our generation is a symbol of femininity, beauty, power of pathos, sincere simplicity and modesty. ” K. S. Stanislavsky
