Potanin Grigory Nikolaevich (1835–1920) - Russian researcher of Central Asia and Siberia, committed a number of expeditions (1863–1899) on Lake Zasan, to the Tarbagatai mountains, in Mongolia, Tuva, Northern China, Tibet, on Bolshaya Khangan. G. N. Potanin introduced a lot of new to the geographical and ethnographic study of the poorly studied areas of Siberia, Mongolia and China, collected extensive information on geography, culture and folk life, compiled the most detailed herbarium of Central Asian plants and wealthy zoological collections.
In 1876, on behalf of the Russian Geographical Society, G. N. Potanin went to the northwestern Mongolia. For two years, rich data was collected for all branches of geographical knowledge. In 1879, the second expedition followed, aimed at studying central Mongolia. The results of these two travels were published in the publication "Essays on North-Western Mongolia", which saw the light in 1881–1883. The fundamental work of G. N. Potanin was highly appreciated in the scientific community. The most valuable scientific material was represented by collections: herbaria, meetings of mammals, fish, birds, mollusks, reptiles, insects. The scientist first described several nationalities, previously unknown or known by first time.
