The author of this book was born in St. Petersburg in the family of a military engineer almost 150 years ago-in 1875. Lida’s mother died during childbirth, and her mother’s sisters raised the girl. After graduating from the Pavlovsk Institute of noble girls, Lydia began to attend dramatic courses of the Imperial Theater School; It was there that she took the pseudonym Char. After the courses, Lydia entered the Alexandrinsky Theater. There was not enough money, and the girl decided to engage in writing - based on the materials of the diary that she kept during her studies at the Institute of Noble Maidens, wrote the story and published it in the magazine in parts. This story, entitled “Notes of Institutes”, was a huge success among adolescents, especially in girls, and soon Lydia Charskaya became a famous and popular writer. Polls conducted in 1911 showed that at that time children of secondary school age most often read the works of A. S. Pushkin, N.V. Gogol and Lydia Char.

but Lidia Alekseevna wrote not only for adolescents - she created many fairy tales for children of primary school age. In this book, we collected six fairy tales by Lydia Char (and in total she wrote 20 fairy tales, 80 stories and many verses). Tales that entered our collection are very different: about friendship and cruelty, about fidelity and greed, about kings and poor - but each of them will force the young reader to think, to rejoice or make up and, of course, to love the books of Lidia Alekseevna Charlian who, already a hundred years ago, were so popular among children and youth.

We called this book “Fairy Gift” not only because one of the tales that entered the collection is so entitled. The fact is that fairies are frequent guests in the tales of Char. They help those who have a good heart fulfill the most incredible desires, and sometimes they themselves fall into amazing adventures.
