Plutarch is called differently: “ancient humanist” (referring to his slight nostalgia for the past, attention to private life and the philosophy of active existence), “educator of Europe” (his “biographies” were read out by the great people of many centuries, even before Napoleon, Goethe and Beethoven), “Good Plutarch” (provincial, family man, companion, as we say). But it is better to call him a teacher of erudites: we all love stories and wise thoughts, jokes and paradoxes - and Plutarch teaches him to truly love all this, not as an inaudible enthusiasm for other people's wit and brilliance, but as a worthy object of a worthy person.

The present edition included the “Feast of the Seven Wise” and the “sayings of kings and commanders” translated by M. L. Gasparov and with the introductory article by A. V. Markov.
