Valeria Sobol explores the topos of love as a disease in Russian literature of the late XVIII-XIX century with an emphasis on the epistemological potential of this at first glance banal cultural cliches. On the material of literary works, as well as medical publications and journalistic texts, the author shows that the traditional motive of a love of love was actually an important literary technique, thanks to which writers touched the most pressing issues of their time, such as the relationship of the soul and body, the emancipation of women and the role of positivist Science in society.
