Konstantin Alfeev, a well -known Moscow musicologist, is working on a new book about the operas of Richard Wagner and Vincent d'Endy, based on different versions of the medieval legend about the flying of the Dutchman. A sudden turn of events turns Alfeev into an outcast. The musicologist runs from the city and finds a refuge in a secluded house on the river bank, where he continues to work on his research. A new version of the legend in the spirit of magical realism is born here, the house in which is likened to the ship, and Alfeev himself is a sailor.
