Vladimir Yakovlevich PrPP-an outstanding domestic philologist, professor of Leningrad University, one of the founders of a structural and typological approach in folklore, which later received wide application in literary criticism. The works of V. Ya. Proppa on the study of folklore (“Morphology of the Tale”, 1928; “The historical roots of the fairy tale”, 1946; “Russian Heroic Epos”, 1958; “Russian Agrarian Holidays”, 1963) entered the Golden Fund of World Science of the twentieth century.
the selected articles of the scientist of different years are included in the present publication, which nevertheless discover a close relationship. “Folklore and reality” is the name of one of the articles of this collection, which gave the name the whole book. Determination of the specifics of folklore as a subject of research, the laws of its development, the establishment of the origins of well -known genres, plots, images, motives - these and other issues are resolved by V.Ya. Propp on the material of not only Russian, but also world folklore: for example, in articles on the variability of the motive of a wonderful birth, the problem of the authenticity of the text “Kalevala”, the folklore sources of the myth of Oedipus. Attention to various aspects of the study of folklore in combination with erudition and methodological validity opened up new and new prospects for scientific searches. The works of V. Ya. Proppa have not yet lost their relevance, in many ways ahead of his time.
