Freed to Jerusalem. TASSO T.
The peak of the work of Torkvato Tasso (1544–1595), one of the greatest Italian poets, is considered to be “Liberated Jerusalem”, a poetic epic about the first crusade, the culmination of which was the capture of Jerusalem (in 1099) and the liberation of the Holy Sepulcher.
“Liberated Jerusalem” is a battle fresco, an exciting narrative about the bloody and heroic events of Christian history with mystical, supernatural and wonderful motives. The poem was translated into Russian more than ten times from the end of the 18th century, but only in the modern translation of the novel by Dubrovkin, presented in our book, it began to play with all the colors of her unique poetics, which is characterized by the developed lyrical beginning, complex psychological characteristics of the characters and a bright image of the dramatic love conflicts.
In this edition for the first time in Russia, the text of the poem is accompanied by a series of engravings of the Italian artist Antonio Tempest (1555–1630), as well as color illustrations of the Flemish artist David the younger (1610–1690).
