The heroine of the novel, the pretty provincial Lore, in his youth, commits the murder of his patron, but, using the spell, is justified by the judge and causes sympathy of the jury. Now she climbs the social ladder, paving her path into the brilliant social life of the Jazz century. Naive, stupid, she is sure that Vienna is in France, Australia in England, that all men in Paris are apparently Louis, and even numbered. However, all this does not prevent her from achieving the location of the rich Henry Spieffard, for whom she is about to marry.
