“Tales of Ghosts” (“Ghost Stories”) is a literary genre, known since ancient times. Stories about ghosts can be found in the books of ancient writers, in oral folk tales and even in the scrolls of ancient Egypt. It is likely that the existence of ghosts embarrassed and fascinated a person at a time when writing has not yet been invented. The English writer and historian Montegu Rhodes James devoted all his artistic works to this genre, becoming the largest master of "stories about ghosts." His work was admired by Howard Phillips Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Jorge Louis Borges and Stephen King. Many of his stories were filmed, and the author’s name invariably appears in all the lists of the most significant writers who created mysticism in the genre. The real edition included chosen stories about the ghosts of M. R. James, each of which is an unconditional masterpiece of little prose.
