Arthur Schitzler (1862–1931) - Austrian writer and playwright, the largest representative of the Viennese impressionism in literature. The ideas of Sigmund Freud greatly influenced the work of the writer. Therefore, the reader observes internal monologues, dreams, secret desires, dreams of heroes. In the kaleidoscope, the short stories “Gloomy souls” are all chained in the scenery of bourgeois cities, their beautiful facades. However, the characters are deprived of an understanding of their life and the life of their lovers. The heroes seem to be alienated in society, their personalities break up and disappear. Neither sophisticated manners, nor prosperity, nor education help to find happiness.
