This extraordinary shrub can be taken as a hybrid of black and gooseberries, but in fact, although these plants are really relatives, golden currants are an independent look that grows mainly on American continents. The shrub was brought to Europe in the 19th century as an exotic novelty, from there it spread to the Caucasus, to Central Asia and further, to the Far East.
