In 1936, the Americans awarded their national book prize to Roman Margaret Mitchell "carried away by the wind." Literary critics and ordinary readers had no doubt that this outstanding female prose received a prestigious reward not in vain. American prose writers wrote about the war of the North and South more than once. However, the new romance differed from the already published works radically. The writer created her version of the history of the south, which passes before the eyes of a beautiful yuzhanka, vigorously building her fate and surviving in the era of a social breakdown of society. According to the plot, “Safeed by the Wind” resembled an adventurous romance with a description of the love story, and at the same time, the epic picture of the death of the civilization of the plantory south unfolded before the readers. The novel, written in the time of the "century of jazz", was clearly "Victorian" in his style and spirit. The intrigue also consisted in the fact that in the literary world Mitchell before the publication of her novel was not known to anyone. It seemed that an ordinary housewife incomprehensively created an epic from scratch, which some critics compared with the “war and the world” of Tolstoy.

, in fact, Mitchell was writing experience. She began work on her novel in 1926. Prior to this, Margaret managed to work as a journalist at Atlanta Jornal, writing more than a hundred essays. Many of them were dedicated to confederal generals and outstanding women in Georgia. Gathering material for its articles, Mitchell studied the periodicals of the 60s, the military memoirs of southerners and the reports of military operations in the territory of Georgia. Since childhood, the writer heard the conversations of relatives and acquaintances about the civil war. Both of her grandfathers fought on the side of the Confederates, grandmother told Margaret about the siege of Atlanta, and the father of the future writer, being the chairman of the local historical society, openly despised the Yankees. The theme of the confrontation of the north and south was Mitchell absorbed and deeply experienced. Therefore, when reading her novel, the “effect of presence” arises. It seems that the author was an eyewitness to all the events described.

Starting work on the novel, Mitchell was in no hurry. By this time, she was married to an insurance agent and led a quiet life of a housewife. However, it was this situation that allowed her to repeatedly redo individual pieces of her future novel, bringing the text to perfection. Mitchell only wrote that she was well known and familiar. As a result, an unlucking masterpiece was obtained, which forever entered the history of literature.
