Great etymological dictionary of the modern German language. Makovsky M.M.

This book is the first etymological dictionary of the German language in Russia. The purpose of the dictionary is to identify the original metaphorical images-symbols (often long-forgotten in the modern language), which formed the basis of the meaning of a German word and motivated its meaning. The dictionary uses the latest methods of etymologization-both linguistic and cultural-historical--allowing to trace various stages of changing the meaning of the word and explain-within the framework of the history of culture-the connection of various meanings among themselves. Most of the etymological solutions cited in the dictionary are not recorded in any etymological dictionary of the German language; The author attracts for comparison about 150 Indo -European languages ​​- both new and ancient.

In the second edition, some vocabulary articles have made corrections and additions made on the basis of the latest studies of the author; Part of the additions is located at the end of the book, links are given in the relevant articles.

The dictionary is addressed to students and graduate students of language universities, linguists scientists, as well as all those who are interested in the hidden aspects of the development of the German language and the history of individual German words.
