Hellenistic world
In the first edition of The Cambridge Ancient History, his seventh volume, which saw the light in 1928, covered under one binding as the history of the Hellenistic world from the battle of IPS 301 BC. e. Before the Snepact World and the Battle of Rafia 217 BC. e., and the story of Rome from its foundation to the same end date. In the first edition, Tom was the name "Hellenistic monarchies and the rise of Rome." In the publication, according to which the Russian translation was carried out, the Greek and Roman sections were made, each, in his book and presented as two independent parts of one volume.
This book contains the first part, which opens with events after the death of Alexander Macedon in 323 BC. e.; It is this date that these events, and not the battle of IPS, is more logical to accept as the starting point of Hellenistic history; But as the final date, the editors of the new edition were preserved by 217 BC. e., since, as Polybius notes, from this moment in Greek affairs, Rome began to play an increasing role. Each chapter of the first part was re-written by a specialist on a specific topic (the author’s team was composed by specialists from the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Canada), which allowed to take into account a huge amount of new material, which became available from the late 20s to the 80s to the 80s XX century. Separate chapters are devoted to the three largest Hellenistic kingdoms: the Egypt of the time of the Ptolemy, Seleucid Asia and Macedonia, as well as mainland Greece, Sicily and smaller states, including Pergames.
The material is characterized by the completeness of the presentation of political events that give a comprehensive assessment, but at the same time, in comparison with the first publication, much less attention is paid to military aspects. The place saved in this way was given to the heads dedicated to historical sources, the Institute of the Monarchy as such and the ideology, basic cultural, social and economic aspects of the Hellenistic world and the development of Hellenistic science, primarily in relation to its application in peacetime and wartime.
This authoritative presentation of a variety of aspects of the early Hellenistic world is intended for both specialists and a wide range of readers.
