In 1803, N. M. Karamzin, by that time a famous writer and journalist, was appointed by decree of Alexander I as a historiographer. From that time until the end of his life, leaving literary activity, Karamzin was busy writing his main work - “History of the Russian State”. He was the first to open the domestic story for a wide range of readers. A. S. Pushkin wrote: “The appearance of this book (it was supposed to be) made a lot of noise and made a strong impression, 3,000 copies parted in one month (which Karamzin himself did not expect) is the only example in our land.
