In 1803, N. M. Karamzin, by that time a famous writer and journalist, was appointed by decree of Alexander I as a historiographer. From that time until the end of his life, leaving literary activity, Karamzin was busy writing his main work - “History of the Russian State”. He was the first to open the domestic story for a wide range of readers. A. S. Pushkin wrote: “The appearance of this book (it was supposed to be) made a lot of noise and made a strong impression, 3,000 copies parted in one month (which Karamzin himself did not expect) is the only example in our land. Everyone, even secular women, rushed to read the history of their Fatherland, until the unknown to them. She was a new discovery for them. Ancient Russia, it seemed, was found by Karamzin, like America - Colombomb. " This edition presents an adapted version of this famous twelve -volume labor.
